Tooth extraction or tooth removal is a dental procedure that involves removing a tooth from its socket on the jawbone. An oral surgeon or a periodontist performs it.

A person with the following issues would need to undergo the surgical process or simple tooth extraction:

  • Cavities (chronic tooth decay)
  • Fractured tooth
  • Dental injuries
  • Sever gum disease
  • Crowded teeth
  • Infection
  • Impacted teeth
  • Tooth Abscess
  • Failed root canal therapy
After the extraction, the tooth's socket becomes empty and becomes prone to degeneration. This degeneration is prevented by a procedure called extraction ridge preservation or site preservation which is achieved by bone grafting.

Ridge or site preservation is a procedure performed after a tooth extraction in order to minimize the negative effects of bone loss that are often associated with tooth extraction. This involves filling the empty socket with an absorbable material, such as collagen and bone, before it heals. This helps to stimulate new bone growth and also prevents collapse or shrinking of the jawbone. The area can then be used for implant placement or other dental procedures at a later date. Site preservation is an excellent way to ensure that any necessary future dental work goes smoothly and successfully and we can preserve your jaw bone.

When Is Tooth Extraction & Site Preservation Necessary?

Tooth extraction and site preservation are necessary when a tooth is decayed beyond repair or damaged by injury. In some cases, teeth may be removed to make room for orthodontic treatment or for additional cosmetic reasons. After an extraction, the area can become vulnerable to bone loss, which can impact dental implants or other restorative procedures performed in the future. As such, it is important that the site is preserved immediately after the extraction to ensure that it heals correctly and allows for successful implant placement at a later date. Site preservation also helps to prevent further recession of gums in the area where the tooth was extracted which can improve facial aesthetics. With proper care and maintenance, site preservation can help ensure lasting results from any future dental procedures.

It is important to note that extraction site preservation is a temporary treatment of the empty socket. As time goes on, the bone substitute grafted in would also undergo shrinkage. Usually, you should get a permanent tooth replacement between three to twelve months after your tooth extraction and site preservation.

So it is essential that you permanently fill up the space of the missing tooth to prevent the collapse that was intended earlier. Partial dentures, crowns, and dental implants are the major tooth replacements that can be used. We use dental implants more often because it’s a permanent tooth replacements with the best outcome and natural results.

Another option for missing teeth is a set of partial or complete removable dentures, which many patients dislike due to messy adhesives and possible tooth slippage, and which must be removed daily to be cleaned and sanitized.

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root implanted into the jawbone and allowed to fuse with the bone over time. A dental implant replaces a missing tooth’s root.

This “artificial tooth root” is then used to support a replacement tooth or bridge. A dental implant joined to the jawbone is the closest thing to a natural tooth because it stands on its own without affecting neighboring teeth and has excellent stability. As previously stated, an underlying solid jawbone must adhere appropriately to dental implants.

If the bone has degenerated significantly, bone grafting procedures should be done to create adequate bone. That is why Dr. Heravi believes that extraction site preservation is preferable to creating bone later.

Dental implants will restore your confidence and improves the quality of your smile where the missing tooth was removed.
